Martin Truex Jr. and partner Sherry Pollex have been selected as third-quarter recipients of the National Motorsports Press Association’s Pocono Spirit Award.
Truex, driver of the No. 78 Toyota for Denver, Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing, and Pollex launched the second annual “Drive for Teal & Gold” campaign to raise funds and increase awareness of ovarian and childhood cancers during September.
Twenty-nine fellow competitors participated, which included the use of customized teal and gold steering wheels, produced by Max Papis Innovations, as well as driving gloves. The autographed steering wheels and gloves were auctioned at month’s end.
The couple received 45 percent of the votes cast by NMPA membership.
Also receiving votes for the third-quarter award were The NASCAR Foundation, Joey Logano and – nominated as a group – Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne.
Long-time spotter T.J. Majors will have a new home in 2018. Majors has worked as Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter for several years. But with Earnhardt’s retirement, Majors will move to Team Penske, where he’ll spot for Logano.
Kevin Hamlin will be the No. 88 team’s new spotter and work with Alex Bowman when he takes over that ride.
Parrott Out at Leavine Family Racing
Veteran crew chief Todd Parrott will not finish the season with Leavine Family Racing. The team released a statement announcing that Parrott has been replaced by Jon Leonard, who will work with Michael McDowell in the No. 95 Chevrolet for the balance of the 2017 campaign.
Kasey Kahne takes over the ride next season with no full-time crew chief yet named.
Homestead-Miami Speedway Testing Scheduled
In preparation for Homestead-Miami Speedway’s Ford EcoBoost 400 championship race on Nov. 19, some of NASCAR’s biggest stars in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be taking to the track for a NASCAR test session on Oct. 24.
It’ll run from 12-7 p.m. (ET). Fans are invited to watch the testing free of charge from the Pit Road Cabanas on the infield, or enjoy a panoramic view of the track from the grandstands or the fourth-floor Speedway Club.
Drivers scheduled to participate are Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Trevor Bayne, Kurt Busch, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Landon Cassill and Drew Herring.
